Health & Safety
PCS has 4 fundamental company values it always seeks to respect; the safety and well-being of ourselves and our customers is one of those values.
Our approach to safety and well-being relies upon the disciplines of Management Commitment, Communication, Training and Well-being Awareness. We talk more about each of these disciplines below;
Management Commitment
Safe working and employee well-being are always on the agenda whenever PCS meet to plan or review any business. It is on the agenda in our weekly Planning & Operations meeting, our local management meetings and every month in our board meeting, meaning there is director-level involvement in keeping everybody safe.
As you should expect of any business claiming commitment to your safety, PCS has a dedicated SHEQ Manager who holds the appropriate IOSH and NEBOSH qualifications and is responsible for providing day-to-day oversight of our safety performance as well as keeping the company on track with new developments in best practice.
Communication
Most of the PCS employees are providing electrical services at our customer sites away from the PCS offices. This can present a challenge to the two-way communication that underpins best Health & Safety practices. The business needs to offer everybody the chance to ask about anything they might find a safety concern as well as the opportunity to offer any ideas that might improve the safety situation. To ensure this communication happens the PCS SHEQ Manager, in agreement with local site management, travels to the site and speaks with the PCS employees based there and also audits the effectiveness of our safety processes where they matter… at the workplace! During these visits, the opportunity is usually taken to deliver the toolbox talks that help reinforce good practice and ensure that everybody has the same understanding of the “do’s and don’ts” of keeping safe.
Training
A vital part of the PCS safety system is continuous training and the maintenance of professional and vocational qualifications. All of the operational staff at PCS are obliged to obtain and maintain the relevant SPA Safety Passport, the costs of which are borne by the company. In addition, company policy directs all employees to refuse any requests to undertake tasks for which the are not properly qualified or insured, without exception and regardless of who makes the request. PCS funds extensive training for employees that covers both practical and academic subjects such as IPAF or PASMA accredited access platform training, asbestos awareness and relevant University degree courses. The objective is to ensure the PCS workforce has the practical skills and technical awareness to complete any project to the highest standards of safety and workmanship.
Well-being Awareness
It can be too easy to focus upon the most obvious safety hazards, such as working at height, and fail to consider less obvious influences such as vibration or stress that can affect individual well-being. To address this concern PCS has engaged an Occupational Health specialist to provide health surveillance services to all PCS employees. A further objective of this programme is the promotion of good health awareness to everybody at PCS because, ultimately, the most effective intervention we are likely to make will start with our own habits and behaviours.
